What is FIRST?

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology

FIRST VISION

“To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.”

FIRST MISSION

“Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.”

FIRST is a non-profit organization that was invented by Dean Kamen in 1989. It is a competition created solely for the purpose to challenge youth and to make them more excited about math, science, engineering, and technology. Every year, a new challenge is unveiled for the thousands and thousands of coaches, mentors, volunteers, and student participants to challenge and inspire. Over the past 20 years, these yearly events have exploded and expanded from obscurity to world-wide renown, with over 210,000 student participants in over 50 different countries. FIRST is an exciting chance for students to expand their horizons in the world of technology and academics.
